Pearls – Preserving the Priceless

pearl strands

Long known as the “Queen of Gems,” pearls possess a history and allure far beyond what today’s wearer may recognize. Throughout much of recorded history, a natural pearl necklace comprised of matched spheres was a treasure of almost incomparable value, in fact the most expensive jewelry in the world.

“Pearls are more delicate than you might think: Contact with metal and gemstones, another pearl, or even rough textiles can scratch them. Exposure to chemicals, including everyday cosmetics, can mar or pit pearls. If allowedto dry out they may discolor, or even crack. The good news is that caring for and storing your pearls really isn’t that complicated.” Brown Safe offers Do’s & Don’ts for Preserving the Priceless.

Their quick glance at protecting during everyday wear:

1. Put your pearls on last–after you’ve already applied all your cosmetics and toiletries, including hairspray, perfume, lotion, and makeup.

2. Take your pearls off first–before you apply makeup remover, lotion, or any other cleansers or cosmetics.

3. Clean your pearls after you wear them, using cotton swabs or a soft cloth. You can use non-chlorinated water to clean your pearls if necessary, but stay away from soap, chemicals, or anything abrasive (including toothpaste).

4. If you wear your pearls often, have them restrung about once a year. Ask the jeweler to put a small knot between each pearl if appropriate–this’ll keep the pearls from bumping against one another, and also keep them from all sliding off the string together if it happens to break.
