  3. February Birthstone: Amethyst

Happy Birthday to our February babies! Your birthstone, Amethyst, is extravagance in violet. Amethyst is a meditative and calming stone which works in the emotional, spiritual, and physical planes to provide calm, balance, patience, and peace.

Amethyst is a violet variety of quartz, which for thousands of years, the most striking representative of the quartz family has been the jewel coveted by princes. Amethyst occurs in primary hues from a light pinkish violet to a deep purple. Amethyst may exhibit one or both secondary hues, red and blue. The best varieties of Amethysts can be found in Siberia, Sri Lanka, Brazil and the far East. The ideal grade is called “Deep Siberian” and has a primary purple hue of around 75–80%, with 15–20% blue and (depending on the light source) red secondary hues.

Some Amethysts pale almost to colourlessness in daylight. The reason for this has not yet been discovered, but it is possible to re-colour them by means of radium radiation. The fact that these stones can lose their colour makes it obvious that amethyst jewelry should not be worn while sunbathing, in a solarium or in a discotheque with black light. Sudden changes of temperature can also be harmful to the stone.

Revered as a gift of the sun by the ancients, citrine was believed to inspire optimism and good spirit. Sister to amethyst, this golden quartz-family gem is a symbol of warmth and affection. This inspiring gemstone is known as the stone of success!

In addition to being November’s birthstone, citrine is recommended for the gift to celebrate the 13th wedding anniversary, signifying fidelity and bliss. The gemstone of joy and contentment, citrine illuminates the sunny disposition of those who wear it.

Derived from the French word Citron, meaning lemon, citrine can vary in color from pure yellow to golden honey to smoky brown. Intense orange colors are the most valuable.

Heating various types of quartz produces citrine. Heat enhancements are routinely performed to lighten citrine’s color. To clean citrine, use warm soapy water and a soft brush. An ultrasonic cleaner is generally safe, but a steamer is risky. Avoid contact with harsh chemicals.

Yellow Topaz is also known as November’s birthstone and is thought to fuel matters of the heart, inspire courage, increase intuition and sharpen wit. Also known as the gift for the 23rd wedding anniversary, topaz symbolizes love, truth and devotion. Topaz sweetens dreams and dispositions. The gemstone of friendship.

    Opal-Pendant

October’s birthstone the Opal has been called “the queen of gems” because it embodies the colors of all the other gems. Opal is one of the few gemstones that are sedimentary in origin. Silica deposits at the bottom of shallow inland seas 30 million years ago became the opals we treasure today. Each opal retains a link to its watery origins as these stones are made up of 6-10% water. Opals are said to enhance self- worth, confidence and self-esteem. Opals are said to help one understand their full potential and it brings lightness and spontaneity as it encourages radiation of positive emotions.

Opals are the traditional gift to celebrate the 14th wedding anniversary.

One multicolor variety is known as watermelon tourmaline, and features green, pink, and white colors bands; to resemble its namesake, the gemstone is cut into thin slices having a pink center, white ring, and green edge. Tourmaline is found in many localities including Brazil, Afghanistan, East Africa, and the USA.

Tourmaline is the traditional anniversary gift to celebrate the 8th wedding anniversary.

September’s birthstone, the Sapphire, has been treasured for thousands of years for its blue-sky color, transparency and hardness. Sapphire is second to diamond on the hardness scale. The oldest gem in the British Crown Jewel collection is a sapphire and is the gemstone in princess Kate’s engagement ring. Blue sapphire is strongly associated with emotions such as sympathy, harmony, friendship, loyalty and unshakeable trust. Sapphire blue has become a color related to anything permanent and reliable, and this is one of the reasons why women in many countries choose sapphire for their engagement rings. It is only within the last 200 years that science has recognized sapphire as a gem form of the mineral corundum. Previous to this discovery, only the blue varieties of corundum were called sapphires. Now sapphires are recognized in all their incredible colors- green, pink, yellow, light red, orange and purple.

Sapphires are associated with romantic love, representing fidelity and romantic devotion. It helps one to find peace of mind and serenity and promotes a life of sincerity, helping preserve one’s innocence while learning life’s truths.
