  1. Verbal Appraisal Event to Benefit Public Radio June 18-20

How can a jewelry appraisal help out your public broadcasting stations? It’s easy! All you need to do is visit our friends at Carreras Jewelers. Carreras is hosting a verbal jewelry appraisal event on behalf of the Community Idea Stations. Simply bring in up to 5 pieces of jewelry between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 18, Thursday June 19, or Friday, June 20th for a verbal jewelry appraisal. The entire $35 appraisal fee will go to benefit the Community Idea Stations. For more information, call Carreras Jewelers at 282.7018.

Appraising is a complex procedure that is performed by professionals who are trained in the appraisal sciences. Carreras Jewelers is staffed by Certified Gemologists and Certified Gemologist Appraisers.

It is recommended to have an updated jewelry appraisal every 3 to 5 years. You can learn more about Carreras appraisals – along with other professional services – by visiting them here. Watch this video featuring Mark Palmgren, a Carreras Certified Gemologist Appraiser, as he reveals the price and history of a few vintage jewelry items from a past pledge event which aired live from our WCVE PBS studio.

  2. June Birthstones: Pearl & Alexandrite

If your birthday falls in the lovely month of June, then you are lucky to have the two gorgeous birthstones of Pearl and Alexandrite.

Pearls are also the traditional gift for the 3rd and 30th wedding anniversary.

We carry Tahitian, South Sea, Akoya and Freshwater Pearl Jewelry. We offer Pearl re-stringing and pearl cleaning services. Remember: Pearls should be the last item you put on and the first item you take off because of their porous matter.

    Let’s learn about Alexandrite:

Fine quality alexandrite is a true connoisseurs’ gem and is highly desirable because it is the rarest of all gemstones.  Unlike the vast number of natural stones used for jewelry, alexandrite is the variety of chrysoberyl crystals which exhibits a change of color depending on light source.  The gem shows distinctly different hues- in response to exposure to daylight where it turns more green and to incandescent light where it turns more red.  The amount of color change and saturation of color are extremely important; plus clarity, cut and carat weight all contribute to the value of a particular stone.  Large alexandrites over five carats are very scarce; and even under 3.00 carat sizes can be difficult to find in other than oval shapes.

Presently, there are very few alexandrites in the market from the Ural Mountains of Russia, where it was first discovered in 1830.  The finest of the original Russian material is considered the benchmark; the best of which do exhibit a distinct “ruby red” to a distinct “emerald green” color change.  This quality is almost never openly sold; and the prices offered would be “off the charts” compared to current trading norms.  Today, the best source for material comes from Brazil, where 1.00 to under 2.00 carat extra fine grade polished stones can wholesale for up to $9,000 per carat.  Good to fine grades range from $2,000 to $7,000 per carat.  As you can see, its rarity is reflected by high market prices.  Color change ranges for even the finest Brazilian goods generate dealer descriptions like “from teal to raspberry”, while others call it “greenish blue to purplish red”.  It should be added that the eastern African and Indian material exhibits a brownish color which reduces prices commensurate with a less attractive appearance.

At Carreras Jewelers, we can offer you fine alexandrite. Contact us for more information about the alexandrite jewelry we have in-stock or for custom designs. info@carrerasjewelers.com
